Santoor legend Pandit Shivkumar Sharma passes awa

Legendary musician and santoor player Pandit Shivkumar Sharma passed away due to a cardiac arrest on May 10. He was 84.

Pt Shivkumar Sharma was born in Jammu in 1938 and is believed to be the first musician to have played Indian classical music on the santoor

Pandit Shiv kumar Sharma began learning santoor at the age of thirteen. His first public performance was in Mumbai in 1955

Pandit Shivkumar Sharma collaborated with flautist Hariprasad Chaurasia and guitarist Brij Bhushan Kabra in 1967

Pandit Shivkumar Sharma composed music for several Hindi films, including Silsila, Chandni as well as Darr

Pt Shivkumar Sharma received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1986, followed by the Padma Shri in 1991, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2001

Shivkumar Sharma is the recipient of international awards, including an honorary citizenship of the city of Baltimore, USA, in 1985
